Diagonal Cotton Baby Bib Pattern

Posted on February 15, 2010

Here is my diagonal cotton baby bib pattern. It is a variation of my t-yarn baby bib I posted recently. I wanted to crochet a cotton bib and came up with this pattern after a little work. I wanted to create a pattern using regular cotton yarn as I know that not everyone wants to crochet with recycled t-shirt yarn. So I present the diagonal cotton baby bib and hope you enjoy working this quick crochet pattern.

Materials needed:
Main color cotton yarn 1-1/3 ozs
Contrasting trim yarn approx. ½ oz

Hook:
“H” USA size crochet hook

Description:
Baby Bib measures 10” across and 8” long from neck edge to bottom center
(5-12 month size shown in parentheses is 11” across and 9” long)
Straps are 10” long each

Directions:
Ch 18 for Newborn to 4 month old (Ch 20 for 5-12 month larger size bib.)

Row 1
Working in back loops only, Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in the next 8 sts, 3 Sc in next st, then Sc in remaining 8 sts of chain. Ch 1, turn. (19 sts)

(For 5-12 month old larger bib, working in back loops only, Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in the next 9 sts, 3 Sc in next st, then Sc in remaining 9 sts of chain. Ch 1, turn.) (21 sts)

Row 2 – 18
Working in back loops only, Sc in ea st down to center, work 3 Sc in center and then Sc in ea remaining st of row. Ch 1, turn. FO.

Edging and Straps:
Row 1
Attach contrasting yarn at upper RS neck edge at end of row 1. Work Sc in corner and then working through both loops, Sc evenly along row ends. Working in back loops only, Sc along diagonal sides to match prior rows and work 3 Sc in center stitch, continue up other diagonal side working in back loops only, and work Sc in corner. Working through both loops, Sc evenly up last side of bib up to top corner. (Edit: 1/31/2013 to change corners as I find it’s not necessary to work 3 Sc’s in the side corners. If desired, you can still work 3-Sc’s in all corners.)

Ch 41, turn and Sc in 2nd st from hook and in each st down chain, then Sc around neck to other corner. Ch 41, turn and Sc in 2nd st from hook and in each st down chain. Join with a Sl St into corner.

ETA: Several people have said these ties are a bit short. For longer ties, Ch 47+ for each tie if you desire longer ties.
Option: For thinner ties – Sl Sl in each stitch of the ties rather than Sc.

FO and weave ends under.

I saw some halter tops for toddlers that look similar to your bib. Just add ties to the sides. The bibs are awesome!
