I started working on some Christmas gifts and recently came across this pretty Christmas tree dishcloth pattern. The pattern features crocheted bobbles for the tree design and edging on the dishcloth.

One thing I found after I crocheted the first dishcloth was that the side edging had different stitch counts on either side of the cloth. One side had 2 stitches and the other had 3 (see photo below). I thought I made an error in the pattern but after frogging the pattern a few times and checking other crafters’ pictures, I found that all the dishcloths had this discrepancy.

So I set out to see if I couldn’t make both sides even and came up with some changes to the original dishcloth pattern.

Details on my version of the original crochet pattern:
Chain 34 and work 32 stitches across. You will have 3 HDC stitches at end of row after the bobble by working last stitch of row into the top of turning chain. I know the original pattern says not to count the turning chain but it looks better to have 2 HDC +Ch 1 on one side and 3 HDC on other side to have even left and right sides.

By working my pattern changes above, the second dishcloth worked out great and finished size is 10.5” long by 9.5” wide with a G (4.25 mm) crochet hook. The first picture in this post is of the second dishcloth I crochet using my changes.

Here is a photo of the first dishcloth I crocheted following the original pattern for the sides. As you can see the left hand side of the bobble-edging is wider than the right side.

Overall this free crochet pattern makes a lovely Christmas tree dishcloth. You can always follow the original pattern instructions or use my variation which does make a bit bigger dishcloth. Either way this project does produce a great-looking dishcloth for a Christmas gift.
