I’m back to share my latest recycled cassette tape craft project. I crocheted this little sachet bag with two strands of cassette tape along with one strand of ribbon yarn. The ribbon yarn gives the cassette tape a better texture to crochet with and makes the crochet hook move more easier.

I added a sachet liner that I crocheted from some cotton thread so you could remove it from the cassette tape sachet. I filled the liner with some spicy potpourri before closing the end up. Then I just inserted the liner inside the sachet.

This is a quick and easy recycled crafting project which requires just a small amount of materials. The result is a pretty sachet that makes a great gift idea.

This week I’m posting a cassette tape clutch. This is a great way to recycle and reuse old cassette tapes into something new and useful. The clutch purse was crocheted using two strands of black cassette tape with one strand of Lion Brand ribbon yarn. Next I wanted to create a lining with a zipper which I could simply insert inside my crocheted shell. I found a fantastic tutorial from Erika for a zippered pouch with a lining on Craftsters.

The tutorial found here has detailed pictures and walks you step-by-step through the process to sew a handy zippered pouch. Now you could just use the pouch alone for a cosmetic bag but I used it to slip inside my crocheted clutch shell. I then hand-stitched it in place and wallah you have a nice finished clutch.

Here are a few clickable pictures below to show you how the clutch looks up close.

The free crochet pattern is below. Please enjoy this recycled craft project. Each week I try and add something new and different for a fun recycled craft experience. I hope my readers have found this project beneficial.

Purse measures 9 inches wide and 5 inches long.

Materials:
2 cassette tapes (90 min. black tapes)
1 ball – Lion Brand Trellis “Nightlife” ribbon yarn (115 yards)
4 – 9” x 5” fabric panels for pouch and lining
1 – 9” zipper

Hook: Metal “J” hook

Chain 28 using 2 strands of cassette tape and one strand of Lion Brand yarn.
Pattern is crocheted using 3 strands of material held together throughout project.

Round 1
Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st of chain.
Continue around the corner and down the back side of chain by working a Hdc in every chain stitch.

Round 2 – 13
Hdc in each st around and do not connect at end of rounds, just continue working Hdc in rounds until 5 inches are completed or approx. 13 rounds. (Adjust your purse length as needed by completing more rounds.) FO and weave end under on side of shell.

Using Ericka’s tutorial on Craftsters, create this pouch with zipper. I used 4 pieces of recycled black fabric that I cut to fit inside my shell. Check your measurements to make sure the pouch fits inside the shell before making your final stitches on your sewing machine. Insert the completed pouch inside the cassette tape shell. Hand-stitch the pouch in place along the top edge of pouch and shell.

I finally got around to crocheting a Barbie fashion doll dress out of recycled cassette tape. It’s been something that I have wanted to complete way back when I crocheted my Barbie doll purses. I had fun digging out my old Barbie doll which hasn’t had a clothes change in probably 30 years. The old girl looks pretty good for being at least 40 years old. I thought the gold boots really went well with her new halter dress too. I also whipped up a little hat to go with her new outfit.

You use just a small amount of cassette tape to crochet this outfit. Use the link above to choose a purse or shoulder bag to finish off your recycled Barbie outfit. I hope you all have as much fun making this outfit as I did. Enjoy!

Cassette Tape Evening Bag with Cozy

This week’s free recycled crochet pattern features an evening bag crocheted using cassette tape and ribbon yarn. The front flap is V-shaped with a Gold button embellishment and a Velcro button for a closure. I had some materials left over so I decided to make a little cozy to go inside the evening bag. You could use the cozy to hold your ID or a credit card. I did not put any embellishment on the front of the cozy but one could be added if desired.

I used two strands of cassette tape and one strand of Lion Brand Trellis ribbon yarn. You hold all three strands together as you crochet. I have found that using just cassette tape as your “yarn” isn’t as smooth to crochet with as other materials. But adding the ribbon yarn really gives your “yarn” a smoother, stronger texture and the crochet hook moves easier.

Closeup of material — Click for full-full photo

I used Champagne #51666 for the ribbon yarn and it really set off the cassette tape to create a pretty evening bag. I tried several times to take some clearer pictures of the completed project but the light just doesn’t do these materials much justice. Trust me when I say that the combination of cassette tape and ribbon yarn is beautiful together. Plus it’s a wonderfully eco – friendly recycled craft!

Cassette Tape Evening Bag Pattern

1 button – for embellishment as shown on bag

Chain 28 using 2 strands of cassette tape and one strand of Lion Brand yarn (for purse).

This week’s bag is a recycled little purse crocheted from plastic tan grocery bags and brown cassette tapes. This was an interesting and challenging project. Unfortunately I found out that cassette tapes come in several shades of browns after I was halfway done with my bag. I finally had to make my bag much smaller than I had planned. I couldn’t find the same shade of brown cassette tape that I started the project with so my purse became the little bag you see in this post. The strap measures about 37 inches untied. I tied it in a knot at the top to create a shorter strap. Variations of this bag can be made using all plastic bags or any other recycled materials that you may want to substitute. The overall size can be increased by adding additional rounds as desired. Have fun with this week’s bag and enjoy your recycling and crafting project.
