Crafting with recycled materials is so addicting. I’m back with another green crafting project using a thrift store t-shirt I got free as it had a bleach stain. It was a pretty pink so I thought it would make a nice baby bib. This baby bib is crocheted from the t-yarn I created from the old t-shirt. Here is my tutorial on how I create t-yarn and how I curl it before crocheting. This baby bib uses about half of an adult sized seamless-sides t-shirt which has been cut into 1/4″ wide strips.

I had shared another t-yarn baby bib before but this crochet pattern has been simplified and makes for an even quicker project. I added flowers as an extra embellishment. I hope you enjoy this free baby bib pattern.

This month over at the Trash to Treasures group on Ravelry we are having a fabric and clothing scraps challenge. So I broke out some old jeans I have been saving and recycled them into some baby bibs.

The first bib is larger and I used the trimmed side seams from a pair of jeans for the bib ties. This bib is more suitable for an older baby or toddler.

My next bib is smaller and features ribbon for the ties. I thought the ribbon would be gentler for a younger baby’s skin than the denim ties.

Below you will find a picture tutorial showing how I made each of these recycled denim heart bibs.

First I cut a heart-shaped template for my bib using a newspaper ad. Fold the heart in half and trim it so each side is shaped evenly. The heart template for the larger bib is 8″ wide by 10″ long. For the smaller bib, my template is 7″ by 7″. Just cut the size you want with a little extra for your narrow sewn seams. I also made a small heart for an embellishment.

Click on any photos to supersize

Lay your heart template on the pair of jeans and cut two. I used the leg so I just made both my hearts from this spot on the jeans.

Now with right sides together, cut your ribbon or use a trimmed side seam from a pair of jeans for the ties and insert it inside as shown in the picture. Each of my ties are about 12 inches long and you just pin them in place on the inside edge of the heart as shown. Just make sure you bunch the ties up together in the middle of the heart before sewing so only the top edge gets stitched in place. Sew around the heart, stitching close to the edge so you have a narrow hem and leave a opening at one side as shown for turning your bib to the outside.

Clip the curves and heart center seam just a bit so it lays flat after turning. Turn the bib to the outside through the opening you left from machine stitching. Press with hot iron and hand stitch close the opening you left for turning. You can top stitch around the heart as I did in the smaller bib and added a small denim heart to the center.

The larger bib I added a trimmed jean pocket to the front and hand stitched it in place. You can add other embellishments and trim as desired. I hope you have enjoyed this upcycled denim project. You can find more recycled denim projects and tutorials at my blog. Enjoy and happy crafting to all![…]

Here is my diagonal cotton baby bib pattern. It is a variation of my t-yarn baby bib I posted recently. I wanted to crochet a cotton bib and came up with this pattern after a little work. I wanted to create a pattern using regular cotton yarn as I know that not everyone wants to crochet with recycled t-shirt yarn. So I present the diagonal cotton baby bib and hope you enjoy working this quick crochet pattern.

I love crocheting with recycled t-shirts. I cut this t-shirt into 1/4 inch strips and curled it as shown in my tutorial for curled t-yarn or tarn. I was inspired by the diagonal dishcloth pattern when I crocheted this baby bib. I had to frog the bib several times to get the size and shape right but I think the finished bib turned out pretty good. I cut the bottom hem off the t-shirt and used it for the two tie straps for the baby bib. You could also crochet your tie straps if you’d rather but I like using the hem strips as they are stretchy and already sewn for you.

I’m not sure why the bib looks red but it’s really pink. I think my camera is getting old and color blind — lol. Anyway here is my t-shirt yarn ball before I started which shows the pink color better.

This bib was crocheted for my little granddaughter. She’s four months old now and this should fit her nicely. It’s of course very washable and durable as it’s made completely from a recycled cotton t-shirt. The best part is that this baby bib was free making it a very frugal and green crafting project at the same time!

Here is my latest t-yarn or tarn project that is created from recycled tee-shirts. I cut an old white tee-shirt up into a very narrow strip about 1/4 inch wide. The shirt I used had no side seams so I just cut around and around the body of the shirt to create one long strip. I then gently pulled on the strip to curl the t-yarn into a nice thin strand which I used to crochet this baby bib. Here is a tutorial on how I cut and curl the t-shirts into curled t-yarn or tarn.

So if you haven’t already tried crafting with recycled t-shirts, check out the process and give it a go. It’s a great way to repurpose those old t-shirts into cool new items.

Here is another item that I have wanted to make out of plastic bag yarn. It’s a crocheted baby bib made using recycled plastic bags and cotton yarn. I added the cotton to give the bib some absorbency. You can just wipe it clean or machine wash as needed. Line dry only! If you put it in the dryer, the plastic will melt.

The bib has a small Velcro closure on the top for easy on and off. I cut just a small square from a long strip of Velcro that I had. It’s about 3/4 of an inch wide and is machine stitched to the back side of strap. I used white plastic bags and some leftover blue variegated cotton yarn for this project. But you can probably use just about any color combination you desired to create your bib. I finished off my bib by working Sc stitches all around the outside edge and neck opening using just the cotton yarn.
This gives the bib a nice smooth finished edge.
