Crochet yourself a hook case from recycled plastic bags!

This project is another installment on my to-do list that I have blogged about recently. If you are not familiar with my to-do list, it is a list of items that I plan to crochet using plastic bags. Once I complete each project, I post the free pattern here at My Recycled Bags.com for everyone’s use. This week I decided that I needed a crochet hook case and it was on my list to do so… Here is the completed project and free pattern. An inside look of the hook case which holds four crochet hooks.

______________________________________
Recycled Hook Case Pattern
Hook case measures 5 inches wide and 10” long.

Material:	One small ball of plastic bags cut into 1” strips.
One small button if desired to embellish purse front.
One Velcro stick-on button.
Lining - 6” x 5” piece of muslin

Hook: Metal “N” hook

Chain 14

Rnd 1
Sc in 2nd ch from hook in each chain.
Continue around the corner and down the back side of chain by working a Sc in every chain stitch.

Rnd 2 - 14
Sc in each st around and do not connect at end of rounds, just continue working Sc in rounds until 4 inches are completed. (The pouch of hook case is seamless where you just work a Sc in ea st in rounds.)

At desired length of hook case pouch, stop doing rounds at side mark of case. (Then only Sc across back side of case to create back and flap.)

Back:
Row 1 - 10	Sc in ea st across back half of hook case. At end of row, Ch 1 and turn at side edge.

Continue Sc in ea st for 10 rows from hook pouch.
(Approx. length is 7 inches from bottom to top.)

Flap:
Row 1 - 14	Ch 1, turn, Sc in each st across back half of hook case for flap.

Fold over after row 1 to create flap edge. If you fold and press down on stitching between these rows it makes a natural fold for the flap.

Row 15
Ch 1, turn. Sc across row to center st, work Hdc in center st, then Sc in ea remaining sts of row.

Row 16
Ch 1, turn. Mark center 3 stitches on flap front. Sc across row to center 3 sts, work Hdc, Dc, Hdc, and then Sc in ea remaining sts of row.

Fasten off and weave ends under on inside of case.

Lining:
Measure muslin and machine stitch 3 sides to create a pocket to slip inside the hook case. Fold down top edge and with wrong side out machine stitch some lines down your pocket in the desired width of your hooks. I made only 4 lines down my pocket as I am using this hook case to store larger hooks. Then slip the pocket back inside your hook case and hand stitch the pocket in place.

Sew button embellishment […]
