As promised, here is the walker – wheelchair tote bag crochet pattern using regular acrylic yarn. I crocheted several of these handy totes lately for a special needs project for our local VA hospital. I made these with red, white, and blue scrap and recycled acrylic yarn to have a patriotic look for the Veterans.

I also crafted some recycled walker – wheelchair tote bags using plastic bag yarn or plarn and that free pattern is found at this link. I have two versions of the bag, one with star buttons above and another with Velcro on the straps. You can pick and choose the style you like as I have posted the patterns for both bags below.

Here is the same tote made with overlapping straps with Velcro.

Free Walker – Wheelchair Yarn Tote Bag Pattern

Materials needed:
2.3 ozs (approx.) each of red, white and blue acrylic yarn.
2) 3” Velcro strips and/or
2) 1-1/8” buttons depending on bag version.

Hook:
“H” U.S. size hook

Gauge using acrylic worst yarn:
8 rows = 3”
7 Hdc = 2”

Description: Tote Bag
Bag measures 12” wide and 9” long

Directions:
Using red yarn , Ch 41.

Rnd 1
Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in ea chain st down to end. Continue around other side of chain by working a Hdc in ea st to other end.

Rnd 2 – 8
Hdc in ea st around the entire bag bottom. Do not connect at end of rounds, just continue working Hdc’s in rounds as this creates a seamless bag. (At end of 8 rows, approx. 3” long.)
Ending at side of bag, switch to white yarn drawing up white yarn on last loop of last st.

(Tip: Draw up new color yarn on last loop of last st so switch of color is smooth. Do this for each color change at side edge of bag.)

Rnd 9 – 16
Continuing with white yarn, Hdc in ea st around the bag. End at side of bag for color change to blue.

Rnd 17 – 24
Continuing with blue yarn, Hdc in ea st around the bag until last 2 sts. Sl St in last 2 sts of row to even out edge. Then Sl St around in next 2 sts (around side of bag to begin first strap).

Row 1 (First Front Strap)
Ch 1, Sc in same st, then Sc in next 4 sts.

Row 2
Ch 1, turn. Sc in ea st across. (5 Sc)
Repeat Row 2 until strap measures 4-1/2” long. FO.

Row 1 (Opposite Front Strap)
Now with same side facing, attach yarn to opposite side approx. 7 sts from side edge of bag. Attach with Sl St, Ch 1. Sc in same st, then Sc in next 4 sts. Check to make sure the straps are about the same distance from each side edge so they match each other.

Row 2
Ch 1, turn. Sc in ea st across. (5 Sc)[…]
