Free Recycled Valentines Bag Pattern

Posted on January 15, 2009

Valentine's Heart BagWith Valentine’s Day just around the corner, here is a cute recycled plastic Valentine’s heart bag that you can crochet. It’s made from recycled plastic grocery bags into a handy bag that can hold Valentine cards. When I designed this recycled bag, I had a little girl in mind and thought she could use it to take all her Valentines to school in.

It would also make a cute gift bag for Valentine’s Day. You could fill it with candy and a card and give it to your favorite Valentine. A bonus of course is that this plarn bag could be used as a little purse all year long.

Here is the free crochet pattern so you too can create this fun little Valentine’s Day heart bag!

Free Pattern for Crocheted Valentine Heart Bag

Materials needed: One ball of plastic bag yarn aka Plarn
(Approx. 12 plastic grocery bags)

2 yards of red fun fur yarn
Small scrap piece of red felt
Red thread for sewing on heart

Hook: J (6 mm) size metal crochet hook

Description: Plastic Valentine’s Bag
Bag measures 7 inches wide and 6-1/2 inches long

Directions:
Ch 20

Rnd 1
Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in ea chain st down to end. Continue around other side of chain by working a Hdc in ea st to other end.

Rnd 2
Hdc in each st around to first end, work 2 Hdc in two end sts, then Hdc in ea st to other end, then work 2 Hdc in ea of the two end sts. Do not connect at end of rounds, just continue working Hdc’s in rounds as this creates a seamless bag.

Rnd 3
Working in the back loops only, Hdc in each st around to first end, work 2 Hdc in ea of the two end sts, then Hdc in ea st to other end, then work 2 Hdc in ea of the two end sts.
(This creates a ridge so the bag will stand up.)

Rnd 4 -16
Working in both loops now and here on out throughout the pattern, Hdc in ea st around the entire bag. Mark center 9 stitches on each side of bag for handle opening.

Rnd 17
Hdc in each st to mark for handle opening. Ch 10, leave 10 stitches un-worked for handle, then Hdc in remaining stitches of first side and across to other side to mark for handle opening. Ch 10, leave 10 stitches un-worked for handle opening on other side of bag to match front side. Hdc in each stitch around until you reach side of bag. (I had approx. 6 Hdc sts on either side of handle opening on the front of my bag.)

Round 18
Sc in each st around to handle. Work 12 Sc around the chain of handle, then Sc around in each stitch until you reach handle on other side. Work 12 Sc around chain of handle, then Sc around in each remaining st of round.

Round 19
Sc in each St around to handle. Work one Sc in each st of handle, then Sc in each st of bag to other side’s handle. Work one Sc in each st of handle, then work one Sc in each st to remaining last 3 stitches at side. Work Sc, Sl St, and Sl St in the last 3 sts of round ending at side of bag. This should blend the edge so round ends with edge being even with last round. Fasten off and weave ends under on inside of the bag.

Fun Fur Trim:
Attach red fun fur at side of bag. Work Sl St around entire round of bag below handle opening as shown.

Cut a small heart shape out of scrap red felt. Attach to front of bag using red thread and needle.

What a cute project! My first thought, when I saw the picture, was how cute it would look sitting on a the table with a potted plant in it. Great gift idea!

This little cute bag really can be a special gift on a special day for the special person. But trust me I’m not good with needle work. Is there anything else I can make with out the needle.

    @Madhumita:
This is a very easy pattern to crochet but if you’re not up for crocheting, you might try a fused plastic project. Take some plastic bags and fuse several together and then create a heart-shaped bag with the fused pieces. You could add a red ribbon for handles. Hope this gives you some additional ideas to try.

I talked my daughter into helping me make the plarn when I showed her this– and said I’d try it for my first plarn bag– and it could be her lunch bag. (I said we’d leave off the heart, she is in middle school.)
About halfway through our ball of plarn, she said, could you put the heart on it?

Turning out really cute. This does take some strength though, not like crocheting with yarn! So burns more calories too, I assume!

Now that’s a cool idea. With this single bag, I can help support the environment by using recycled material. And by making this Valentines bag myself, I can simultaneously save money and give a gift that is much more meaningful!

    Thanks for the idea 🙂
