Recycled Round Grocery Tote Bag
Here is my newest recycled bag. It’s a round grocery tote that I crocheted with plastic bags made into plarn yarn. I designed this recycled plastic tote to be roomy and to replace my favorite reusable grocery tote that is disintegrating. My favorite grocery tote is going to have to be retired as it’s just falling apart after years of use.
Anyway I love the big round base of this reusable tote. The stripes add a cheery look to the design. I added thick heavy handles and this grocery tote should service me for many years. I have written up the free crochet pattern below and hope you too can make yourself a useful tote bag for your trips to the market.

What a GREAT idea! I love it – makes me want to learn to crochet! I featured this on my blog this morning at http://whittskitsfabricscrafts.blogspot.com/2013/04/find-it-free-on-friday-totesbags.html with a direct link back to here.
Thanks!

Hi Cindy,
Thank you for your patterns. They are so cool! I will have to start saving my bags as I have reused most of them. What an innovative idea!

I really like your pattern – especially the handles. I’ve just completed my first bag made out of plarn. I worked on it at a family reunion and can’t tell you how many people were fascinated and impressed with the concept and the appearance! Male, female, young and old, all showed great appreciation for making something useful out of those plastic grocery store bags! I showed most of them how to create the plarn by cutting bags into loops and stringing them together.
My five year old granddaughter helped me separate the loops and roll the plarn into a big ball! I used SC for the base, changed to DC for the sides (to make it go faster) and used HDC around the handles.
Thanks for trailblazing such a great project!

I love this tote and the idea of recycling bags.–thank you! I have made several for myself and friends and receive many compliments.
My bags tend to come out wider than the pattern once I start the HDC–like 20-21 inches instead of 18″. I have to reduce some stitches across several rounds until I get to 18″. The bag still looks fine and functions, BUT I wish I could figure out why this is happening. I usually am close to 10″ for the sc round base so my overall gauge doesn’t seem to be the problem (I use a 9mm hook).
I would really appreciate any ideas of how to fix this issue. I am not an experienced crocheter and have no one to ask.

@Roberta – I can’t say for sure why your bags come out bigger. It could be because you crochet looser than I do. I do crochet tightly and it could be one reason your bags come out wider when you work the HDC stitches. I would try switching to a K crochet hook when you begin to crochet the HDC’s and see if you like how that comes out better. It will be tighter stitches and narrower. The thing about crafting with recycled materials, it can really vary on what outcomes you get on the products. Best wishes and I hope this helps.
