Red White & Blue Plarn Basket

Posted on March 18, 2015

Here is my latest crocheted recycled plastic bag basket. This basket uses mainly grey Walmart plastic bags and then I added stripes of red, white and blue “plarn” to decorate it with a patriotic theme.

I used an old plastic-coated clothes hanger for the handle. I cut a piece 19 inches long and put some curved ends on the hanger so I could attach it to the sides of my crocheted basket.

Once I had the hanger attached to the inside of the basket, I used a pliers to squeeze closed the curved hooks around the top edge to secure it to the basket.

Now for the free crochet pattern details for the basket. I used the recycled plastic bag basket pattern for the base of the basket with just a few changes. As you can see the original recycled plastic bag basket had different handles as shown in the photo below.

In the red, white and blue basket I followed the pattern to round 20. At row 20, I did two rounds in blue plarn, then white plarn, and ended with two rounds of red plarn yarn to finish the basket.

In progress before I added the handle.

I then used the hanger for the handle and just single crocheted tightly around the hanger. I started at one end of the hanger where it was secured to the basket and worked my way across to the other end. I used a long tail to weave around the hanger to cover the bent hooks on either end.

Finished size of the basket is 5-1/2 inches tall by 6-1/2 inches wide with a 18 inch handle.
