Crocheted Helmet Hat Pattern
I have been crocheting helmet hats for the troops. After using a few different patterns, I tweaked my own basic pattern and thought it might be helpful to write out the crochet pattern for everyone’s free use.
These helmet caps are designed to only come to the edge of the ears. If you want a longer hat or a cuff, repeat round 6 a few extra times for a longer hat. Then add the 2 rounds of single crochet for edging trim. The two rounds of single crochet add a nice tight trim for the hats.
I only chain 2 for the beginning of my rounds. I find the joining seam is tighter this way. Here is the back joining seam. You can click on it to super size it. If you prefer you can chain 3 but I think by just chaining two, the seam looks better.
As always please enjoy the free crochet pattern below!

Free Crochet Helmet Cap Hat Pattern
Finished adult helmet hat measures: 21″ circumference by 8″ long
Hook: H (5 mm) US sized crochet hook
Materials: 3 ozs Wool or Worsted Yarn
Mix and match yarn to add stripes as desired.
With H hook, Ch 4 and join to form ring.
Rnd 1
Ch 2, work 11 Dc in ring. Join with Sl St to beg Ch-2. (12)
(Ch-2 counts as first Dc st.)
Rnd 2
Ch 2, Dc in sm st and 2 Dc in ea st around. Join with Sl St to beg Ch-2. (24)
Rnd 3
Ch 2, *2 Dc in next st, Dc in next st*. Repeat between * around Join with Sl St to beg Ch-2. (36)
Rnd 4
Ch 2, Dc in next st, 2 Dc in next st, *Dc in the next 2 sts, *2 Dc in next st*. Repeat between * around Join with Sl St to beg Ch-2. (48)
Rnd 5
Ch 2, Dc in next 2 sts, 2 Dc in next st, *Dc in the next 3 sts, 2 Dc in next st*. Repeat between * around Join with Sl St to beg Ch-2. (60 sts)
Size check: Thinner wool yarn requires a few extra stitches to achieve the 21-inch cir. I have found working even on 64-66 stitches with thin wool necessary.
Rnd 6-15
Ch 2, Dc in each st around. Join with Sl St to beg Ch-2. (60)
Helpful tip: If using thinner wool, I have found that I need to add at least one additional round to obtain a 8-inch long cap. If you desire a longer hat, just add a round or two at this point before crocheting the 2 rounds of edging.
Rnd 16-17 (edging)
Ch 1, Sc in ea st around. Join to beg Sc and FO.
Seamless Hat Option (corrections made 1-30-2024):
Start with a magic circle or you can chain 3 to create a ring to crochet into. You don’t join or work any chain 2 to begin each round. You simply crochet into the next stitch of each round without turning or joining.
Round 1 – 6 DC in magic circle (6)
Round 2 – 2 SC in each stitch (12)
Round 3 – 2 DC in each stitch (24)
Round 4 – Now starting with original hat pattern above, work round 3,
and each additional round of increases to 60 or 65 stitches depending on thickness of yarn.
Work DCs even now for 16 rounds, then one round of SC to even out the edge, followed by one round of SC in contrasting trim color. This results in a hat about 8.25 inches long by 21 inch circumference with a H (5mm) crochet hook. Adjust stitches as necessary to obtain the circumference and length you desire.

Do you have an address for the service men who you make these for? Is there a place to send these hats to?
Jun 24, 2013
@Kathleen — I send my hats to the Warmth for Warriors group.
Here is their address to send the hats.
Warmth for Warriors

Good for those freezing cold Afghan nights. It gets unbelievably cold at night out there. It’s good to see you are doing something positive for the troops over there.

Do the hats need to be particular colors? Our guild is always in the middle of a charity project and this sounds like a good one.
Jul 07, 2013
@Kaye- The Warmth for Warriors organization requests darker colors like brown, black, grey, or tan for the troops overseas. But for the ones used here in the states at hospitals and clinics, they can be any color. Please just mark the fiber content as they want 100% wool for overseas only. Thanks so very much for any help your guild can provide.

The crochet helmets are well liked in the middle east as well as in south Asia community also. I really liked your post and insisted to comment. I added your site in my book marks. I will happy to see more positive posts here.

@Amy, yes you are right. And the design which has been shown here is still in trend. People prefer to wear such type of hats which can help them to overcome from cold as well.

I love this pattern! It works up nicely and quickly! Just a quick question, do you allow anyone to sell the finished version of your patterns?
Nov 10, 2019
@Andrea – It is fine with me to sell any crocheted hats you make using my patterns. I just don’t allow my pattern directions to be reprinted or posted on any websites. Please just refer people to this site should they ask about the pattern. Thank you.

Hi Cindy,
thanks for sharing your pattern. I have been searching for a pattern to make myself a tightish beanie to wear under head scarves. I have Alopecia Totalis so am completely bald and find wigs too scratchy so having options for headwear is great.
I’ll have a go a making it up in a light weight cotton too as we are getting into warmer summer months here and will let you know how they turn out.
Hope all is well with you.
Many thanks Fliss

Thank you for this pattern. I have been making chemo caps for an organization that distributes them to Veterans and Cancer centers across the US.
