Dollar Store Purse Lining Hack

October 20, 2013 1 comment

This post is going to show you how to use a dollar store purse for a plarn purse lining. This hack is a great way to use this cheap purse for a crocheted purse lining. Turn the dollar purse inside out so the colorful flowers are on the inside and it becomes a quick and easy purse lining.

I crocheted two recycled plastic bag panels out of plarn using a J (6 mm) crochet hook. I worked increases and decreases with the plastic bag yarn to create a similar shape to the dollar store purse. Here is one panel as I began to crochet the opening for the purse handle and a closeup of the stitching around the opening. I just worked in a circle around the opening crocheting until I had a circular opening to match the dollar store purse.

Put the two panels together and using a strand of plastic bag yarn, stitch down one side, across the bottom and back up to the top. Using a H (5mm) crochet hook, I added some novelty yarn to trim out the circular opening and along the top edge. This completes the recycled plastic purse shell.

Once the plastic shell is done, I inserted the dollar store purse inside my crocheted plarn purse. I hand stitched the lining in place

Lining the Pink Passion Plarn Purse

Several people have asked for a picture tutorial on how I lined my pink passion plarn purse. So here are a few pictures I took and I will walk you through a brief explanation on how to line a plarn purse.

I basically create a pocket to slip inside my plarn purses to line them. I simply cut a piece of fabric for the lining and with right sides together and sew it together. Here is the completed lining I made for the recycled Pink Passion Plarn Purse which includes two pockets and a magnetic closure.

First step is to lay out the completed purse on the fabric lining as shown. The bottom of the purse lining is placed on the fold line of the fabric.

Lining a Crocheted Plarn Purse

I wanted to line this crocheted plarn purse and share the tutorial on how I line purses and bags that are made from recycled plastic bags. First I want to say that I am not a seamstress. This lining project is very basic and is a no-frills way to line a crocheted plarn purse.

First you need two pieces of fabric just wide enough for the bag to fit over with a little extra up top for your finished edge. Using recycled fabric, scrap material or whatever you have on hand will work.

I had a small piece of leftover fabric so I used it for a pocket for the inside of my lined purse.
