I crocheted this granny stitch blanket throw using 2 strands of yarn held together. I used black medium weight yarn throughout along with many miscellaneous skeins of yarn. I crocheted the 2 strands held together with an N (9mm) hook. I basically just used up all the bits of different yarns I had leftover in my stash. When I ran out of yarn, I just tied a new color to the end and continued around. Some people call this a magic ball blanket but mine was more of a magic skein blanket as I had larger amounts of yarn in each color.
I start my granny blankets by chaining 3 stitches or you can use a magic circle to start. Crochet 2 double crochet (DC) stitches into the third chain from the hook and chain 1. Crochet *3 DCs ( granny cluster) into the same chain, chain 1*, repeat between * 3 times. Slip stitch to the top of the chain 2 to join. At the end of round 1, there are 4 double crochet granny clusters and 4 chain 1 spaces (corners).
I like to use an alternate method to start a new corner on my grannies. I chain 2 and work 2 double crochet (DC) stitches in the corner of the new round. Then move on to the next space and crochet 3 DCs. Here is a photo of the starting corner.
I crocheted a new pattern for a blanket for the Veteran’s Outreach Program. It is a stitch sampler pattern that uses a different stitch every row. I really love the center panel as it just has such a pretty design.
I did do some light blocking on the center panel to get it to lay down flat. It wanted to cup at the center but now as shown in the photo, it blocked out nicely.
The free crochet pattern for the stitch sampler blanket is found here at Canoe Mtn Designs. It is a pretty pattern that is written well and has good resources to show the different unique stitches used in the pattern.
Here is a photo of my completed blanket which I was only able to crochet through row 47 as I ran out of yarn.
Here is my latest crochet project. A rectangle granny throw that can be used as a lapghan or wheelchair throw. This is a project that I crocheted using mostly donated yarn and is being given to the VA Outreach Program.
I use this rectangle granny blanket pattern. I chain 41 stitches to start and do the joins a little different. The way I do the corner joins is really handy and you don’t have to slip stitch over to the corner space to start a new round. It makes for a nicer corner join in my opinion. With the weather cooling off a bit, I was inspired to crochet one of my favorite blanket patterns. Here is a round ripple throw that I crocheted for a local Veteran’s program. This pattern is the Round Ripple that Crochetville’s Aggie May created.
Here is a close-up on the edging. I did two rounds of single crochet (SC) to finish off the trim on the blanket throw. Final width is 44 inches wide.
The round ripple was crocheted using several different shades of green vintage yarn that was donated to me. A kind lady from Ravelry donated two big boxes of yarn to me for charity crafting. It has been put to good use for hats, Christmas stockings and blankets for Warmth for Warriors and other Veteran’s needs.
