Baby Pinafore and Booties

I just finished up crocheting this cute baby pinafore pattern. I used some vintage Good Shepherd Pompadour yarn which is 85% virgin wool and 15% rayon. This yarn is a lightweight sport yarn. The original crochet pattern I used is called Baby Pinafore with Ruffles. I did a few modifications to the pattern which I will detail below.

I used a G (4 mm) crochet hook and lightweight sport yarn to crochet this baby set. Because this yarn is very lightweight, I feel the pinafore is for a newborn size. I would use a heavier yarn and an H (5 mm) hook for a larger baby as my pinafore is not very big.

I joined after row 6 and used a small velcro strip for the back closure.


Modification details:

At Row 6 – I found the stitch count off. I only had 57 stitches. I added one DC stitch at top of Ch and joined with a slip stitch. I also am working in the round at this point.

Row 7 – Ch 3 and don’t turn. I worked DC’s around and added a few stitches before joining to the top of the Ch-3 so I had 65 stitches as the pattern called for.

Row 8 – Ch 3 and continue to work in the round without turning. At the end of the row after the last skip 2, work 2 DC in last stitch and Ch 2 and join to the top of the beginning Ch 3 to make the last shell. I had 22 shells in the body at this point.

Row 9 – Ch 3, and DC in in the same space stitch (Ch-2 space) and work shells in each shell around. In last stitch, work 2 DCs and Ch 2 and join. Repeat.

I worked 12 rows of shells before working the ruffle on the bottom. I worked 6 DC in each shell for a fuller ruffle at the bottom. I worked 5 DC in each shell for the neck ruffle.

Finished size is a small newborn in my opinion. Finished length is 10 inches from top shoulder to hem. 7 inches across the front just under top ruffle.

The crocheted baby booties were made using my cuffed baby bootie pattern.

I used just under 2 ounces of yarn for both the pinafore and the booties. This was a fun and quick baby gift set which I enjoyed crocheting.
