Brown Plarn Hobo Purse

May 1, 2018 2 comments

The recycled plarn hobo purse is a pattern I adapted 10 years ago with permission from Dao over at ShortyLamCrochet Blogspot. I created the purse using recycled plastic bags or plarn for my pattern. You can find the crocheted plarn hobo pattern link here.

For this purse, I used a K (6.5 mm) crochet hook so it is a smaller size than the original pattern link. I started with chain 23 and did do one extra round of stitching before adding the final few rounds of decreasing at the top. Finished size of the purse is 9 inches wide by 7.5 inches long. For the strap, I braided 3 strands of plastic bag yarn together and then just attached the ends at the each side of the purse.

Recycled Plastic Bag Clothes Pin Bags

December 8, 2017 5 comments

I have been working on an order of clothes pin bags crocheted from recycled plastic bags. These bags are crocheted using recycled plastic retail bags cut about an inch thick. The strips are joined by using the looping method to create what is called plarn.

Here is one more I crocheted with white plastic bags along with a few rounds of blue bags for an accent stripe. I love adding the ribbon to the projects as it spices up the recycled bag look.

I have crocheted many clothes pin “peg” bags over the years. This is one of my earliest plastic bag patterns that dates back to 2007 when I started my blog. Here is the free plarn clothes pin pattern.

Feel free to use the pattern to crochet your own recycled clothes pin bag or for charity work. It is also fine to sell the clothes pin bags you make using my pattern and please just provide pattern credit to My Recycled Bags. Also I do acccept orders for this bag and have one available for immediate purchase at my products page.[…]

Recycled Plastic Water Bottle Holder

June 5, 2017 1 comment

As you might expect, I have a huge stash of white plastic bags. People give me bags all the time to recycle. They know I use them to make plarn and crochet them into new useful things. So this is my latest project, a large water bottle holder.

This water bottle holder is designed to hold a large Nalgene reusable bottle or a 32 ounce water bottle. I used this free crochet pattern to make the water bottle carrier but with a shorter strap. The original pattern calls for a long strap that can be worn across the body. This water bottle holder has a […]

Hashbrowns Bags Recycled

March 28, 2017 1 comment

I have been saving hashbrowns 5 pound plastic bags to recycle them into a crocheted basket. I saved 5 bags and cut them into plastic bag yarn or plarn. Because the bags are made from thick plastic, I cut one long continuous strip about 1/2 inch wide. I joined the strips together with a knot which I then just hid within my stitches as I worked the basket.

Each bag cut in a single 1/2 inch wide strand equals 23 yards of plarn. When I started this project I had 5 bags cut up and began crocheting the basket using my small recycled plastic basket pattern. Here is the link to crochet the project […]

Small Recycled Plastic Basket

November 12, 2016 4 comments

I am back to share a new recycled plastic bag plarn project. In this project, I set out to create a small basket tray to use for holding items for an upcoming charity fundraiser. I wanted a tray type basket to hold the items and also one that could be reused for kitchen or bath items later.

This was a fun and quick plastic basket that I crocheted using less than 20 recycled plastic retail bags made into plarn using the looping method of cutting and assembling the bags. Below you will find the free crochet pattern and details. Enjoy the pattern and happy crocheting to all!

Striped Recycled Plastic Bag Tote

August 17, 2016 3 comments

I crocheted this latest recycled plastic bag or plarn tote using lots of white plastic bags and a few red and grey plastic bags. Recycling all the white retail plastic bags I get can be challenging. Let’s face it, the white bags are boring and need something to help brighten up the project when you crochet or knit with them. So by adding some colorful bags, I created a few stripes to spice up this recycled tote bag.

I used the free recycled round grocery tote pattern to crochet this bag. I just changed up the stripes of colored plarn a bit for a different look than the original pattern. But otherwise it’s the same pattern. As with any pattern, you can always just make a few changes which will result in a new look.

Below is another picture taken with the tote bag laying down flat.[…]

Recycled Basket with Kitchen Items

July 24, 2016 4 comments

I crocheted this plastic basket from recycled plastic retail bags. The bags are cut 1 inch wide and connected using the loop method to create plarn or plastic bag yarn. Here is the free plarn basket pattern I used to crochet the basket.

The basket is filled with kitchen items for an upcoming Relay for Life fundraiser. Included in the basket are potholders, an oven mitt, dishcloths and pot scrubber.

The jute and green granny square kitchen items were shared in a recent blog here […]

Mini Plarn Flower Basket

June 11, 2016 3 comments

I needed a little mini flower basket for a garden theme crochet project so I cut some plastic bags very thin to accomplish this tiny recycled plastic basket. The basket is filled with wild Yarrow and Lupine flowers.

I used 2 recycled plastic bags and cut them in long continuous strips just a 1/4 of an inch wide. Here is one bag cut just 1/4 inch wide and rolled into a little plarn ball. As you can see this is thin, single strand plarn. I joined strips with a small knot and then just crocheted over the ends on the inside of the basket to hide the splices.

Weaving a Recycled Plastic Strap

June 3, 2015 5 comments

I needed to make a strap for my grey and pink colored recycled bag so I used a spool knitter. There are many variations of this 4-prong tool and you weave the loops around the posts by slipping the bottom existing loop off and over the new loop. You work around to each post in this manner to weave a long braided-style strap.

I love how by using the grey and then pink bags, the strap has a variegated look about it.

Here is a photo of the spool knitter I used which is made by Rugworks.

The handle is being made from recycled plastic bags made into plarn. I created a striped look for the strap handle by attaching two pink plastic bag loops together and then adding one grey loop. Then two more pink strands and one more grey and just keep repeating the process. […]
